Measuring Trapping Forces in Optical Tweezers
Introduction Since the work of Ashkin on radiation pressure, the possibility to use the optical force of optical fields to trap and manipulate microparticles has found a wide range of applications. From atomic and nonlinear physics to biology, optical forces have provided a convenient way to control the dynamics of small particles.Optical tweezers, for example, have proved useful not only for t...
متن کاملOptical vortex trapping of particles.
We demonstrate three-dimensional trapping of low-index particles (20-microm-diameter hollow glass spheres in water) by using a single, strongly focused, stationary dark optical vortex laser beam. The holographically generated vortex, which is similar to a TEM(01)* mode beam, was also used to trap and form ring patterns of high-index particles.
متن کاملThe effect of Mie resonances on trapping in optical tweezers.
We calculate trapping forces, trap stiffness and interference effects for spherical particles in optical tweezers using electromagnetic theory. We show the dependence of these on relative refractive index and particle size. We investigate resonance effects, especially in high refractive index particles where interference effects are expected to be strongest. We also show how these simulations c...
متن کاملMeasuring and adjusting the trapping position in optical tweezers
We show how the trapping position of an optically trapped 1-µm polystyrene bead is measured, and that it can be shifted by changing the relative radiation pressure exerted on the bead. The trapping position of the bead relative to the focus is measured using defocusing microscopy and 2-photon microscopy. Our observations are explained by the two component approach for optical forces.
متن کاملSimplified Trapping Probability Models from Simulation of Optical Tweezers
This paper presents a radial basis function based approach to generate simplified models to estimate the trapping probability in optical trapping experiments using offline simulations. The difference form of Langevin’s equation is used to perform physically accurate simulations of a particle under the influence of a trapping potential and is used to estimate trapping probabilities at discrete p...
